Joane Cardinal Schubert

Joane Cardinal-Schubert (1942-2009) was a renowned artist from Red Deer, Alberta, deeply influenced by her Kainai ancestry. Her vibrant, contemporary works, which included hand-tinted prints, paintings, drawings, and mixed media, often incorporated imagery reminiscent of ancient petroglyphs and addressed themes like indigenous sovereignty, cultural appropriation, and environmental issues. She studied at the Alberta College of Art and Design and the University of Calgary, earning a BFA in 1977. Cardinal-Schubert's art was showcased in over twenty-six solo exhibitions across Canada, the U.S., and Europe.

In recognition of her contributions, Calgary named a high school in her honor.
