David Blackwood

David Lloyd Blackwood was a celebrated Canadian artist from Wesleyville, Newfoundland, known for his etchings that depicted coastal life and Eastern Canadian tales. Influenced by his early experiences aboard his father's schooner, his work "The Lost Party," showcasing the 1914 Newfoundland Sealing Disaster, was displayed at the National Gallery of Canada when he was just 23.

Blackwood held nearly a hundred solo exhibitions and taught for decades at Trinity College and the University of Toronto. In his final years, he created the "Images of Home" series from his hospital room, shifting from gothic etchings to vibrant watercolors, finding therapeutic solace in art.

David Blackwood remains a profound visual storyteller in Canadian art.
