Charlie Beil

Charles A. (Charlie) Beil, born in Germany in 1894, began his artistic journey early, helping his blacksmith father. After leaving Germany in 1906, he worked various jobs, including as a Captain’s Boy, with gauchos in Argentina, and in roles across North America, from highway construction to ranching and the U.S. Cavalry. By 1920, he settled in Montana, where he met and was mentored by artist Charles Marion Russell. After Russell's death, Beil continued assisting his widow and honing his craft.

In the early 1930s, Beil moved to Banff, Canada, establishing a studio and earning acclaim as "Banff’s Cowboy Artist" for his sculptures of the early West. His notable works include rodeo trophies for the Calgary Stampede and the Prehistoric Park at the Calgary Zoo. He received numerous honors, including an honorary degree from the University of Calgary, membership in the Cowboy Artists of America, and the Order of Canada.
