Neil Patterson

Image
Neil Patterson , a Canadian artist born in 1947, emphasizes that true painting stems from passion rather than mere talent. Raised in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, he was inspired to pursue art after visiting the National Art Gallery in Ottawa as a child. Despite facing challenges, such as a lack of resources and formal art education, he found his path through ceramics before ultimately focusing on painting due to health issues. Patterson's distinctive style involves thick, impressionistic oil techniques that capture emotions and light rather than merely reproducing reality. He encourages freedom in artistic expression, believing that paintings should reflect personal impressions rather than exact replicas of nature. His work spans various subjects, and he is noted for his contributions to plein air painting. As a member of several prestigious art organizations, including the Oil Painters of America, Patterson has gained recognition in both North America and China, with his work featur...

Ron Moppett

Image
Ron Moppett (born 1945) is a celebrated Canadian artist known primarily for his abstract works combining painting, collage, and non-traditional materials.  Drawing inspiration from a variety of historical and cultural styles, the artist offers a diverse view of pop culture and a glimpse into the “dailiness” of life. A brilliant colourist, Moppett stencils and distills shapes with oil and acrylic paint, creating complex picture puzzles that hold multiple layers of meaning. Moppett has exhibited extensively throughout Canada, the United States, and Europe.  Two major surveys of his work have been organized, the first by the Walter Phillips Gallery at The Banff Centre in 1982 and, secondly, the Glenbow Museum in Calgary in 1990. Irene McCaugherty

Image
Irene McCaugherty was a self-taught artist, writer, and poet. Her folk-art paintings explore the people and cultural narrative of southern Alberta’s pioneer days in the later part of the 19th and early 20th century. She recorded the daily happenings of life in early Alberta with humour and colour, and invited viewers to enter her world of auction sales, musical rides, road building, small town life, and ranching. Irene McCaugherty often painted in an unusual dimension, long and narrow. That rectangular shape reflected the view she had out the window of her pick-up truck, as she drove around southern Alberta to capture the stories of the people and the places she called home. Her watercolours do not conform to traditional one-point perspective, and she found a voice that was uniquely hers, capturing the imagined past and invented history of life on the prairie. She created more than 1,000 paintings before her death in 1996, many of which have been donated by her family to the Let...

Maud Lewis

Image
Maud Lewis was a prominent Canadian folk artist from Yarmouth County, Nova Scotia. After marrying Everett Lewis in 1938, she moved to a tiny, one-room house in Marshalltown. Despite its modest size and lack of amenities, Maud transformed the house into a vibrant, colorful space by painting every surface and object. The house, now preserved at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, is a testament to her artistic spirit. Maud spent her entire life close to her birthplace and found joy in painting, despite dealing with congenital physical challenges and rheumatoid arthritis. She once expressed her contentment with her simple life, saying that as long as she had a paintbrush, she was happy. Maud began painting with her mother, initially making and selling Christmas cards. Her artistic journey gained wider recognition after a 1965 CBC broadcast. She received significant commissions, including one from the Nixon White House, and became well-known through books, plays, documentaries, and even...

Barbara Mary Harvey Leighton , known as Barleigh, was a Canadian artist born in Plymouth, England. Barbara continued to create woodblock prints and support her husband's career. She was a member of the Canadian Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers and the Alberta Society of Artists. In 1941, the Leightons moved to Chilliwack, BC, but later returned to Alberta. After A.C. Barbara Leighton passed away in 1986. Here are some of her famous paintings:

Alfred Crocker Leighton

Image
Alfred Crocker Leighton (1901-1956) was a prominent Canadian artist born in Hastings, Sussex. Although he initially pursued architecture as his father wished, Leighton’s early talent in drawing persisted. During World War I, he joined the Royal Flying Corps illegally but sustained injuries in a crash that would trouble him for life. In 1924, Leighton gained recognition with a scale model of the port of Liverpool, leading to a role with Canadian Pacific where he was introduced to the Canadian Rockies. His early Canadian works, created while traveling by train and sketching landscapes, were destroyed in World War II bombings. Leighton’s second trip to Canada in 1927 included exhibitions in Banff and Calgary. He returned in 1929 to continue his Canadian explorations and showcased his work across several cities. That same year, he became the Art Director at the Art Institute of Calgary, where he also met and married Barbara Mary Harvey in 1931. Leighton founded the Alberta Society of Arti...
